What are the Different Shades of Window Tint?

Black Teslas Model S Diamond Garage Las Vegas Home

Whether you’re tinting for heat rejection, privacy, or aesthetics, choosing the right shade of window tint isn’t just about what looks good. It affects your visibility, comfort, and yes legality.

At Diamond Garage, we walk every customer through this before they commit to a film. But if you’re still researching, here’s a breakdown of the different shades of window tint, how they compare, and which ones are legal (or not) in Nevada.

What Does the Percentage Mean?

Before diving into the specific window tint percentages, let’s cover what these numbers actually mean.

The “%” on tint refers to Visible Light Transmission or VLT basically, how much visible light is allowed through the glass. A 5% tint means only 5% of light passes through (very dark), while a 70% tint lets 70% of the light through (very light). Lower number = darker film.

But keep in mind most modern SUVs, minivans and pickups already have factory privacy glass on the rear windows, which darkens the final result. Therefore, a 20% film on a factory-tinted SUV window will look darker than 20% on a clear sedan window.

5% Tint AKA “Limo TINT”

If you’ve ever seen a limo or a fully blacked-out SUV, chances are it had 5% tint on the back windows. This is the darkest shade legally available in most markets and provides near-total privacy during the day. You can’t see in, and depending on the vehicle and time of day, it can even make it tough to see out especially at night.

5% tint is ideal for people who prioritize privacy above all else, but keep in mind it’s not legal on the front windows in Nevada. Some clients use it for rear windows only, pairing it with a lighter legal shade up front.

15% Tint. For Sleekness and Privacy

15% tint has become a popular shade for drivers who want something dark but not too extreme. It still provides a high level of privacy from the outside and gives your car a dark, aggressive aesthetic especially on black or dark gray vehicles.

It’s light enough that many drivers still feel comfortable at night, but still too dark for front side windows under Nevada law. That said, it’s commonly applied to rear passenger windows for a uniform appearance without going full limo-dark.

20% Tint. Balanced and Functional

20% tint is considered the sweet spot for a lot of people. It gives your vehicle a clean, finished look while still offering enough visibility to feel safe at night. On factory-tinted SUVs and trucks, 20% blends seamlessly, creating an OEM appearance.

For Las Vegas drivers, it’s a strong choice for the rear section of the vehicle, especially when paired with a legal 35% tint up front. It offers respectable privacy, helps keep your interior cooler (ceramic film only), and still allows for decent rearview visibility after sundown. Like the darker shades, though, it’s not legal for front driver/passenger windows.

If you want your front windows tinted and plan to stay street-legal in Nevada, 35% is the darkest film allowed by state law. It cuts glare, reduces UV exposure, and offers noticeable heat rejection (ceramic film only) without drawing the attention of local law enforcement.

While it doesn’t offer as much privacy as the darker shades, especially on bright desert streets, 35% is a good compromise between aesthetics and compliance. It is often paired with 20% or 15% on the rear for a cohesive look.

50% Tint. Ideal for HEAT REJEcTION

50% film is very light and not often used to make the vehicle darker. Instead, it’s most commonly applied as a ceramic film to provide more heat rejection for someone who is looking for tint but not something much darker than the factory glass.

While it doesn’t offer privacy or much shading for side windows, it’s extremely useful for cutting overhead glare from the sun, especially when driving into the bright afternoon sky. We recommend it as a subtle yet practical add-on for anyone dealing with daily commutes across the desert.

If you’re looking for the lightest legal shade with real performance, 70% ceramic film is the go-to option for many of our clients. While Nevada law does not allow tint on the full windshield (only a visor strip above the AS-1 line), you can apply 70% to any of your windows if you prefer a lighter, more subtle look without sacrificing heat rejection.

Despite being nearly clear, Autobahn’s Ceramic i3 70% film blocks 93% of infrared heat and nearly 100% of UV rays. This helps keep your interior cool and protected without darkening your glass. It’s perfect for drivers who want maximum comfort and full visibility, day or night, while still protecting your vehicle interior protected from harmful UV rays and IR heat.

In fact, pairing 70% on the front windows with a darker 20% or 15% on the rear is one of the most balanced setups we offer giving you a clean OEM look, legal compliance, and heat control where it matters most.

Why Shade Choice Affects Night Driving

A big part of picking the right window tint shade comes down to visibility at night. If you drive frequently in dark areas like backroads, unlit neighborhoods, or remote desert roads, overly dark tints (5% or 15%) can be frustrating or even dangerous.

Many of our clients settle on a 35%/20% split legal up front, privacy in the back for the best of both worlds.

FAQs About Window Tint Shades

What is the most popular window tint shade?

15% or 20% is easily one of the most popular tint shades nationwide and here in Las Vegas, it’s a top choice for rear windows. It gives you solid privacy without going full limo-dark, and it still maintains decent visibility, even at night for most drivers. Pair it with legal 35% on your front two windows, and you’ve got a clean, functional setup that provides enough privacy and performs great.

Is 20% tint hard to see out of at night?

For most people, 20% is still very manageable at night especially if your eyes are used to driving in lower light. That said, if your vision struggles in the dark, or you often drive in poorly lit areas, it can feel a bit too dark. This is why some drivers opt for 35% in the front and 20% in the rear to strike the balance between privacy and visibility.

Can people see through 35% tint during the day?

Yes, you can still see into a car with 35% tint during daylight hours especially if the interior is light-colored. It definitely cuts glare and softens how visible things are inside, but it’s not “blacked out” by any means. If privacy is your top concern, you’ll want to go darker in the rear (15–20%) and keep 35% on the front two to stay legal in Nevada.

Does darker tint always block more heat?

Nope. This is a common misconception. Shade looks darker, but that doesn’t mean it performs better. A high-quality 70% ceramic tint can block more heat than a cheap dyed 5% film. The real difference lies in film type, not just darkness. Ceramic films use nano-technology to block infrared heat, which is the stuff that actually makes your cabin hot.

How do I pick the right window tint shade for my car?

Start with your goals. Want privacy? Go 20% or darker in the rear. Want legal protection and a clean look? Stick with 35% in the front. Want max heat rejection with little to no darkening? Ask us about ceramic tint options. We always recommend coming by for a side-by-side demo.

Does factory glass tint affect my final tint shade?

Yes it makes a big difference. Most SUVs and trucks already have a 20% privacy shade built into the rear glass. When you apply aftermarket film over it, especially something like 20% or 15%, it will appear even darker than it would on untinted glass. That’s why we always take a meter reading and help you visualize the final result before installing anything.

Can you see clearly through ceramic tint at night?

Absolutely. High-end ceramic films like Autobahn Black Ceramic or Autobahn Ceramic i3 are designed for clarity. Even darker shades like 20% or 15% still offer crisp, low-glare visibility at night which is one of the big benefits over cheap dyed films. No murky tint, no hazy vision, just smooth, clear contrast whether it’s day or night.

Will 20% tint affect my ability to see in rain or at night?

For most drivers, 20% is still totally usable in night driving or during storms. But it really comes down to personal preference and driving conditions. If you’re often in dim, rural areas or have sensitive night vision, it might feel too dark. If you’re driving well-lit streets around Vegas? You’re probably good. Either way, we can show you what it’ll look and feel like before we tint.

What’s the best tint shade for Las Vegas heat?

For heat rejection, it’s less about the shade and more about the film quality. We recommend ceramic films across the board even in lighter shades like 35% or 50%, they’ll block a huge portion of solar heat. For the Vegas summer, most of our customers do 35% on the front (to stay legal), 20% or 15% in the rear, and pair it with a visor strip to block glare. That combo delivers heat rejection, style, and street legality.

Does tint shade fade or change color over time?

Only if the film is low quality. Cheap dyed films tend to fade, turn purple, or bubble after just a year or two in the Vegas sun. But ceramic and carbon films from top-tier brands (like Autobahn, which we use at our shop in Las Vegas) are designed to stay color-stable for life. And with our lifetime + no-fault warranty, if anything ever does go wrong, we’ve got you covered no questions asked.
